After the Storm: What to Check

Once the wind dies down and it's safe to go outside, work through the house methodically.


Roof. Look for missing shingles, exposed decking, or debris that punched through the surface. Don't get on the roof yourself if you don't have to — binoculars from the ground are safer and usually tell you enough to know if you need a professional look.


Leaks. Check ceilings, attic spaces, and around windows for new staining or dampness.

Standing water. Note anywhere water is pooling near the foundation or in the crawlspace, and how long it takes to drain.


Tree damage. Look for leaning trees, exposed roots, or large limbs hanging in the canopy that didn't come down yet — those are often more dangerous than what already fell.
